{"id":2754,"date":"2011-04-14T05:00:33","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/?p=2754"},"modified":"2011-04-10T20:49:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T00:49:22","slug":"the-force-is-with-the-gimp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/the-force-is-with-the-gimp\/","title":{"rendered":"The Force Is With The Gimp!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned in the blog before, I use <a title=\"The Gimp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gimp.org\" target=\"_blank\">The Gimp<\/a> for all my photo editing.\u00a0 I use it exclusively when creating\/editing all my cartoon features.<\/p>\n<p>The Gimp is every bit as powerful as other graphics applications and absolutely free!\u00a0 You can download <a title=\"The Gimp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gimp.org\" target=\"_blank\">Gimp<\/a> for Windows or Mac.\u00a0 If you decide to give Linux a try, The Gimp, in most cases, is already installed.\u00a0 If not, it&#8217;s an easy matter of downloading and installing via the particular Linux distribution&#8217;s repository.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Each month, I contribute a &#8220;Gimp Tip&#8221; to <a title=\"PCLinuxOS Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/pclosmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PCLinuxOS Magazine<\/a>. I though I&#8217;d share one of those Gimp tips with you here in the blog.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example of what The Gimp can do.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2757\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/lightsaber-cut-cake-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2757 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"lightsaber cut cake large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/lightsaber-cut-cake-large-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Gimp and The Force help me celebrate my birthday!\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/lightsaber-cut-cake-large-251x300.jpg 251w, http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/lightsaber-cut-cake-large.jpg 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gimp and The Force help me celebrate my birthday!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thanks to Gimp&#8217;s creative community and its ability to add plug-ins, a Star Wars lightsaber effect is easily created with a single mouse click!\u00a0 First, download the lightsaber plug-in from Gimp&#8217;s plug-in registry at<a title=\"Lightsaber Plugin\" href=\"http:\/\/registry.gimp.org\/node\/21369\" target=\"_blank\"> http:\/\/registry.gimp.org\/node\/21369<\/a>.\u00a0 Drop the script into \/.gimp-2.6\/scripts (<a title=\"Gimp Plug-in location Windows and Mac\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techzilo.com\/how-to-install-gimp-plugins-scripts-brushes-and-gradients\/\" target=\"_blank\">if you run Windows or Mac, the location is going to be a bit different<\/a>).\u00a0 Next, open Gimp and open an image.\u00a0 Create a new layer with transparent background on top of the original image.\u00a0 Make sure this new layer has an alpha channel.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, simply draw a white line.\u00a0 It&#8217;s helpful if you already have a reference in the photo such as a sword blade, pole, stick or other prop to draw over.\u00a0 Select Filters&gt;RED STORM FX&gt;LXSE v1.0. In the new dialog box, select your core size, glow size, glow color, etc. Click OK and the plug-in does the rest!\u00a0 You can see an example (above) of how well the plug-in works.\u00a0 That&#8217;s me using a double lightsaber to cut my birthday cake!
