{"id":1282,"date":"2010-10-28T05:00:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-28T09:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/?p=1282"},"modified":"2010-10-27T13:26:45","modified_gmt":"2010-10-27T17:26:45","slug":"skimming-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/skimming-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"Skimming Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1300\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1300 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"skimmingcell\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/skimmingcell1-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"Be careful is someone is using a cell phone in a checkout line.\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/skimmingcell1-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/skimmingcell1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Be careful is someone is using a cell phone in a checkout line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are a lot of thieves out there and they&#8217;re coming up with new ways to steal your cash.\u00a0 (Kudos to Howie Chizek at <a title=\"WNIR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wnir.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">WNIR<\/a> for reporting this on his radio show. )<\/p>\n<p>The first theft method is called &#8220;Skimming.&#8221;\u00a0 Skimming occurs when the thief places a card reading device OVER the existing ATM or gas pump card reader.\u00a0 When you swipe your ATM\/Debit card, it goes through the skimmer THEN into the legitimate pump\/ATM card reader.\u00a0 You&#8217;re still able to purchase gas or withdraw cash, but the skimmer reads your card and collects all the information.\u00a0 The thief returns at a later time, collects the skimmer device, and now has card information from everyone who used that specific pump\/ATM.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful!\u00a0 if you see a device loosely placed on a gas pump or ATM device, it could be a skimmer.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s being advised that individuals patronize the same gas pumps\/gas stations and ATMs.\u00a0 Since you already know the\u00a0 surroundings, you&#8217;ll more easily spot a skimmer device.\u00a0 (More info on Skimmers <a title=\"SFGATE skimmer report\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.sfgate.com\/2010-08-17\/business\/22222440_1_skimmers-gas-pumps-gas-stations\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> as reported by SFGate.com)<\/p>\n<p>The second method being used to steal your identity or money involves cell phones.\u00a0 Cell phones are now\u00a0 equipped with extremely high resolution cameras.\u00a0 The thief will stand behind you in a checkout line pretending to be talking on their cell phone.
