Like a lot of cartoonists, I&#8217;ve experimented with my share of pencils, pens, drawing nibs, and graphic software applications. After all this testing, you tend to settle in on a few that become tried and true.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">But you continue to try new tools as they cross your path.\u00a0  And, every once in a while, a new tool does comes along and you wonder why you never used it before!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Such is the case with my pencil sharpener.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">I have a couple of really nice electric pencil sharpeners. One is a Boston electric pencil sharpener.  The other is made by Panasonic.  I&#8217;ve had both for years. Again, the result of trying out different tools.  I&#8217;ve used the Boston pencil sharpener for quite some time. The Panasonic is tucked away just in case the Boston sharpener burns out.  With such terrific electric powered devices, little did I ever think that I&#8217;d go back to using a hand held pencil sharpener!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-490\" title=\"sharpener\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"sharpener\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>How did I discover this nifty little studio assistant?\u00a0 Well, I was looking for some new paper, pens, and <a title=\"Blue Pencil\" href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/blue\/\" target=\"_blank\">non-photo blue pencils<\/a> for my comic strip George.\u00a0 I contacted the folks at <a title=\"Faber-Castell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fabercastell.com\/14786\/Welcome\/index_ebene3.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Faber-Castell.<\/a> I discovered that their home office in NE Ohio wasn&#8217;t very far from my home.  I spoke with one of their Consumer Relations Representatives.<span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\"> <\/span><\/span>I explained that I was a cartoonist and looking for some new artist supplies. \u00a0 <a title=\"Faber-Castell Graphic Arts Products\" href=\"http:\/\/artgraphic.fabercastell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">I asked if she could recommend a particular Faber-Castell paper and pencil.\u00a0  I also inquired about Pens.<\/a> (As I mentioned, I&#8217;m always on the lookout for artist pens.)\u00a0 Lastly, I asked where I could purchase these.\u00a0 I live out in the sticks and art stores are pretty rare in my neck of the woods.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always a treat to find an art supply store while on a road trip.\u00a0 Otherwise, I&#8217;m purchasing these things online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal;\">She told me she&#8217;d be happy to send some samples.\u00a0 A few days later, I received a large envelope.\u00a0 (When art supplies arrive, it&#8217;s just like Christmas!)\u00a0 The package contained pencils, pens and paper. <span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Inside there was also a <strong>really<\/strong> neat looking pencil sharpener.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-open.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-491\" title=\"sharpener open\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-open-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"sharpener open\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-open-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-open-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.georgetoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/sharpener-open.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s called the <a title=\"GRIP Trio Sharpener\" href=\"http:\/\/artgraphic.fabercastell.com\/products\/product_detail.aspx?id=9D9CBE8301204797B1C9B0413513103D\" target=\"_blank\">GRIP Trio Sharpener<\/a>. It&#8217;s double sided. One side has two sharpener openings, and the other side has one. These accommodate different size pencils and give you three different point shapes. The sharpener opens in the middle. When you sharpen a pencil, the shavings collect inside. You simply snap off the case to clean.  It&#8217;s quite portable and looks great on my drawing board.  And it&#8217;s always handy.  It&#8217;s my favorite tool! I use this sharpener all the time!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal;\">So, instead of  spending 50 bucks on an electric pencil sharpener, pick up this little gem!  It&#8217;s affordable and does a great job of sharpening your pencils!  Plus, you can take it with you when you&#8217;re on the road with a sketchbook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal;\">By the way, the pencils they sent are fantastic and the paper is top notch!\u00a0  I&#8217;m using a Light Phthalo Blue #145 for my non-photo blue sketching of the comic strip.\u00a0 <a title=\"POLYCHROMOS Artist Color Pencils\" href=\"http:\/\/artgraphic.fabercastell.com\/products\/product_detail.aspx?id=7F16ABA7546E49ADAC49CF416A2B4184\" target=\"_blank\">You can find the pencils here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; font-style: normal;\">The pens are terrific!\u00a0 These are<a title=\"Pitt Artists Pen\" href=\"http:\/\/artgraphic.fabercastell.com\/products\/product_detail.aspx?id=D19268BAF84E4F63B1DC2869F879ADCC\" target=\"_blank\"> Faber-Castell&#8217;s Pitt Graphic artists pens<\/a>.\u00a0 The pens use India Ink.\u00a0 The Pitt pen makes lines that are solid, crisp, and dark.\u00a0 It does a wonderful job of final inking completely covering my blue sketch lines.\u00a0 The ink dries to to a waterproof finish.\u00a0 Best of all, the pen is odorless.\u00a0\u00a0 And, they come in a variety of line widths.\u00a0 Coincidentally, I&#8217;ve discovered that many of my cartoonist friends use these pens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">I highly recommend the Faber-Castell line up of art supplies.
