The other day I was tuning in radio shows on the internet. \u00a0I happened to hear author Nelson DeMille on the Mark Simone radio show<\/a> (WOR 710 AM out of \u00a0New York, NY). \u00a0You can hear the broadcast\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It seems Amazon.com isn’t being as open to writers and book publishers as one would think. \u00a0Approximately 900 authors signed an open leter to amazon. \u00a0In part it reads:<\/p>\n

Amazon is involved\u00a0in a commercial dispute with the book publisher Hachette\u00a0<\/a>, which owns Little, Brown, Grand Central Publishing, and other familiar imprints. These sorts of disputes happen all the time between companies and they are usually resolved in a corporate back room.<\/p>\n

But in this case, Amazon has done something unusual. It has directly targeted Hachette’s authors in an effort to force their publisher to agree to its terms.<\/p>\n

For the past several months, Amazon has been:<\/p>\n

—Boycotting Hachette authors<\/a>, by refusing to accept pre-orders on Hachette authors’ books and eBooks, claiming they are “unavailable.”<\/p>\n

—Refusing to discount\u00a0<\/a>the prices of many of Hachette authors’ books.<\/p>\n

—Slowing the delivery<\/a>\u00a0of thousands of Hachette authors’ books to Amazon customers, indicating that delivery will take as long as several weeks on most titles.<\/p>\n

–Suggesting on some Hachette authors’ pages that readers might prefer a book from a non-Hachette author instead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I love to read. \u00a0 And if you love to read (and\u00a0own a Kindle), you’ll want to pay attention to this dispute. \u00a0It affects authors, publishers and readers.<\/p>\n
